ROC-Michigan is dedicated to improving working conditions and increasing opportunities for advancement in restaurants nationwide for the collective benefit of workers, employers, and consumers. ROC-Michigan takes a three-pronged approach to achieving change in the restaurant industry: campaigning for workplace justice, promoting the high road to profitability and conducting research/policy work.

As a Communities Creating Healthy Environments grantee, ROC-Michigan will focus its attention on the rarely addressed prepared food environment.   ROC-Michigan will facilitate a regional collaboration that engages resident families, policymakers, health advocates, urban farmers, food outlets and others through the unique focus on restaurant workers and prepared food outlets.

In urban communities like Detroit, most families get their meals from restaurants, yet restaurants are often ignored in policy work – save menu labeling. ROC-Michigan will establish a restaurant workers leadership council, facilitate a minimum of six worker trainings, offer model policies to better regulate the prepared food environment, and mobilize at least 200 restaurant workers to advocate on these issues.
